It's taken me a while to get into fish. Growing up over a thousand kilometers from the ocean, most of the fish I had as a kid was weeks old, frozen, yucky stuff. On top of that, my normally inspired mother insisted on hiding mysterious fillets under a thick white parsley sauce. I'd spend the whole meal picking toothpick sized bones out of my mouth, vowing to run away from home if she ever served it again.
I started off slowly a few years ago with salmon and prawns, then graduated to tuna, basa, cod and haddock. The easy stuff. I *heart* sushi, but I usually stick to the basics, or rolled up things.
I'm still not ready for much more than that though. I've been reading a few tasty sounding recipes lately for skate and turbot, but I just can't bring myself to eat something that looks so slimy and sinister.
But look! I've got a great excuse not to be brave: Fish Online have listed the seafood we are supposed to avoid, due to over-fishing or unregulated fishing methods. And who's on there? Skate and turbot! Hurray! So I'll avoid those fish purely for ethical reasons, and not just because I'm scared.
I'm pretty sad to see tiger prawns on the list. But I'm also happy to see that Alaskan salmon is on the fish to eat list. Various types of cod are on both lists, which makes it pretty confusing to know what to do there. Might just avoid that one for a while.
In related news, I've recently acquired two arctic char fillets, of which there is very little information on the internet about! I'm scared to google a picture of an arctic char though in case it's a creepy skate type monster... errgghh!
